Before You Become a Consultant
If you're ambitious and enjoy your work, but no job seems quite right in the corporate world, there just might be one employer you haven't considered.
Yourself. There are all sorts of businesses you could start, of course, but being a consultant has become particularly popular for people in information technology, human resources and a variety of service industries. According to the Kennedy Information research firm, management consulting is a $130 billion industry -- and growing rapidly.
So the money is there, but should you be? That was the theme of "Management Consulting: Dream Job or Worst Nightmare?" a recent workshop in Orinda that was presented by the Institute of Management Consultants, a national non-profit association.
Many people get into consulting because they have been laid off, but the change can be difficult if you see consulting only as a resting place between jobs, said Tes Welborn, a San Francisco management consultant who spoke at the workshop. She said that you may have trouble landing clients if it's obvious this is just a phase you're going through."This is more a marathon than a sprint," Welborn said. "You need to be in this business for the long haul, not between jobs."
You also need to focus on exactly what services you want to provide, said another of the workshop's speakers, East Bay consultant Barbara Chan. "Just because you know how to do 100 different things and you're good at them, does that mean you want to do all those things?" Chan said. "It's really good to get clear with yourself what you're comfortable with."
